What is a Passive House and why does it make sense in Menorca?

Useful information

The Passive House standard explained simply

The Passive House (or Passivhaus) standard is a design and construction system that aims to reduce a building’s energy consumption to a minimum while guaranteeing a high level of indoor comfort. It is based on principles such as continuous thermal insulation, the elimination of thermal bridges, airtightness and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

A Passive House home maintains a stable temperature all year round, with very low energy consumption. This translates into comfort, financial savings and a smaller environmental footprint.

Passive House in a Mediterranean climate

Although many people associate Passive House with cold climates, applying it in Mediterranean areas such as Menorca is particularly worthwhile. Here the challenge is not only to retain heat in winter but also to keep it out in summer. A well-conceived passive design reduces the need for mechanical heating and cooling, even in the hottest months.

The key lies in solar control, thermal mass, night-time ventilation and a well-designed envelope. In Menorca, a well-designed passive house offers comfort all year round, with minimal energy use and an indoor environmental quality far superior to that of conventional construction.
